Love my Crape myrtle. Happy customer. Have not received delivery. I love my tree. Crape myrtles planted in areas that receive less than six hours of direct sun do not get enough sunlight for adequate bloom development. Hybrid crape myrtles usually flower first. The semi-dwarf varieties such as Tonto, Acoma and Sioux follow a week or two later.

Heavy infestations of aphids decrease flowering. This is the most common insect problem on crape myrtles.

White flies and other insect also can cause problems for crape myrtles. Drastic pruning or pruning after new spring growth can delay summer flowering.

Drastic pruning, in fact, may promote excessive growth and less flowering. Excessive fertilization, especially high amounts of nitrogen, in conjunction with other factors, primarily improper pruning, can eliminate or delay flowering. Foliar diseases decrease plant vigor and flowering, especially in the absence of new growth in spring. Long term, this disease is not detrimental to the plant.

They are considerably more popular in the South, where they grow much more vigorously. In the North, the bush often puts on its best flowering display during unusually hot summers; other years, it may hardly flower at all.

Winter's cold may not kill the plant there, but very little of it will remain alive above ground. In the South, Natchez crepe myrtles grow as trees and can get to be over 30 feet tall.

The foliage becomes a reddish-orange in fall. They have a reddish-brown bark that peels the way birch trees Betula spp. These trees bear white blooms.

As with most crepe myrtles, the flowers are the main selling point. They not only grow in striking clusters but also put on a display that lasts longer than that for most plants mid-summer to fall. As a bonus, butterflies are attracted to the flowers. The blooms yield to fruits that are brownish and persist through winter.

Do not over-fertilize Natchez crepe myrtles. Excessive fertilizing can reduce blooming, as the plant uses the energy to increase leaf growth. In addition to reducing your viewing pleasure, the result is often winter injury. A common care problem for this plant is having the leaves turn brown, for which there can be a variety of reasons.

The Natchez cultivar and other types, as well prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Exposure to full sun can help prevent some of the less mildew-resistant varieties of crepe myrtle trees from succumbing to the disease. I have been trimming it to control growth, but not cutting it back. It is now a beautiful 40 ft tree. The cinnamon bark is gorgeous.

In the winter after mowing the lawn is over, I run electricity to the tree and provide timed uplight for the trunks. There are three more in the back yard, but the front tree is the highlight of the winter garden. It just takes care. The tree still has a chance to become beautiful once again. It is such a shame what people do to them though they are such beautiful trees when not cut back like that, all cutting them back does is leave you with an eyesore in the winter time and incredibly floppy branches in the summertime.
