What is the difference between the ensign and liahona

The governing First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Friday that it is ending its four current magazines, including Ensign and New Era, replacing them with three global publications, starting in January. Ensign, an English-language publication that features articles for adult readers, will be phased out in favor of a new magazine, called the Liahona. That title previously had been used for an all-ages magazine the church had been publishing in many languages for its international members.

Subscriptions for Ensign, New Era and the Friend will automatically roll over to the print editions of the new magazines come January. The three new titles also will produce digital content, available online and through mobile apps. The digital content is available for free. These include: Ensign — a monthly Church magazine for adult Latter-day Saints that contains stories, sermons and every May and November addresses from the Church's semiannual general conferences. Liahona — a monthly worldwide Church magazine published in more than 40 languages that contains content for adults, youth and children, as well as local content unique to various countries and languages.

New Era — a monthly Church magazine directed to youth of the Church ages that helps them prepare for their future by providing the teachings of Church leaders and real-life example of other youth. Friend — a monthly Church magazine for children that includes messages from Church leaders, stories, activities and contributions from children. Several factors—such as the number of subscribers, availability of translators, and distribution capability—affect the frequency of publication in different languages.

See more information about the frequency of publishing in specific languages. Digital magazine content will continue to be available for free. New subscription options and updated product information will be available at store. The youth around the world are all getting the same magazine, in their own language, with content created under the direction of the First Presidency just for them.

They will find answers to their questions. The truth of their divinity as sons and daughters of loving heavenly parents will be renewed. The publication will focus on the value of diversity and offer a global perspective. Sister Jean B. More members can now have these blessings at their fingertips—from scripture activity pages for children, to stories from youth around the world, to articles about gospel principles for adults.

How will the Church magazines change? The length and format of the printed magazines will undergo changes. Readers can expect improved digital magazines available online and in mobile apps.
